The Ouseburn Valley sits between the tidal river Tyne - across from Gateshead on the south bank - and the residential communities of Byker and Heaton to the East; and St Ann's and Shieldfield to the West. All of these have their own particular history and communities, and all have been shaped in some way by the historical importance of the river to industry and community in the area.
Parts of Shieldfield and Byker, and all of St Ann's, are currently within the boundary of the Ouseburn Regeneration Area.
In addition, the Ouseburn Regeneration Area has two larger areas as boundaries - to the West is Newcastle City Centre and to the East, Walker Riverside. Both of these areas are the subject of Area Action Plans - the Walker one has been completed and adopted, and the City Centre is in the early stages.
