LIFE IN THE PAST - 1859 STYLE!  Gateshead Heritage @ St Mary's
St Mary's Church
Oakwellgate
Gateshead

Tuesday 29th September 6pm-8pm, 10 weeks, £35

How did people live here 150 years ago?  What activities did they get up to - legal......and illegal?  What did they eat, drink, where did they work,.....and what did they get up to after dark?

The course will involve the use of original newspapers from 1859, original street directories and maps.  There will be visits to places of local interest such as the Town Hall, the Shipley Art Gallery and a visit to a real still-serving Victorian pub for some Victorian refreshment (in appropriate measures of course).

This course is for people who want to find out a bit more about the town and the community they live in.   It is for people who like to talk to other like minded people about their own family history, about the streets they were brought up in and the school they went to - all likely to be linked to the Victorian past in some way.

It is also for those who liked history at school but have never had the opportunity to follow that interest up.  If you didn't enjoy history at school because of the teacher, well, try it again, the teacher is great!

You don't have to have any qualifications for this course.  In fact if you don't have any qualification, that is even better.  You simply turn up and enjoy the experience.
