By Car

From the north and west: Exit the A167 southbound at the Manors/New Bridge Street roundabout and take the A193 (New Bridge Street) towards Byker/Walker.

From the south: Exit the A167 northbound at the 55 Degrees North roundabout and follow City Road towards Byker/Walker.

From the A1058 (Jesmond Road): Turn onto Portland Terrace and continue over the roundabouts along Portland Road and Stoddart Street. Brown signs on New Bridge Street, City Road and Stoddart Street will direct you to the area’s three main car parks:

• Ouseburn North - off Boyd Street,
• Ouseburn Central – on Foundry Lane, off Byker Bank. Pedestrian access to Lime Street over the footbridge.
• Ouseburn South – on Spillar’s Quay (not yet formally open).

These car parks are currently all free of charge.

Car parking is also available off Stepney Bank under Byker Bridge. Limited disabled parking is available on Lime Street and there is a coach drop-off point on Lime Street next to the Village Green. On-street car parking is a problem in certain areas, so using the car parks is advisable.

Plans are underway for a larger multi-storey car park in the Ouseburn Central area, for extra parking off Stoddart Street and to formalise and open the Spillar’s Quay car park.

By Bus
Located just two miles east of Newcastle’s city centre, the Valley is served by a number of bus services running along two east/west routes, giving access to both the top and bottom of the Ouseburn area.
Top of the Valley - Frequent network services (12, 39, 40, 62 & 63) run into and out of the city centre along New Bridge Street, Byker Bridge and Shields Road. Get off at St Dominic’s Church on New Bridge Street for Stoddart Street, Stepney Bank, Lime Street and Stepney Road, and at Morrisons Supermarket on Shields Road for Elizabeth Street, Byker Bank and James Place Street.

Bottom of the Valley - The Q2 Quaylink bus service runs frequently from the city centre, along the Quayside and in a loop as far as St Peters Basin, a mile east of the Ouseburn river. Key stops are Lime Street (on Cut Bank) for Seven Stories, The Cluny and other attractions on Lime Street and Stepney Bank; Ballast Hills for the Quayside Business Development Centre; St Lawrence for Hoults Yard and the Mushroom Works and Spillers Quay for the Tyne Pub, the Free Trade Inn and the Byker Ouseburn Regeneration Centre.

By Metro
Newcastle has an excellent Metro system with good links across the region. The nearest Metro stations to Ouseburn are Manors (New Bridge Street) and Byker (Shields Road), both about 15 minutes walk away (see ‘On Foot’ below).

On Foot
From Manors Metro station - exit the station, turn right and climb the small flight of steps, turning right onto New Bridge Street. Follow this road for approximately ten minutes until you reach the traffic lights opposite the Tanners public house. From here, use the information boards and finger posts to reach your destination.

From Byker Metro Station - turn left when you exit the station and walk on until you reach Shields Road. Then turn left again and continue straight on until you are opposite Morrison’s Supermarket. The information board near to the bus stop will direct you from here.
You can also reach the Lower Valley by walking along Newcastle Quayside east as far as you can along the designated pathway, before coming off the path at the mouth of the Ouseburn where you will find the Tyne pub. Alternatively, walk up the cobbled Horatio Street behind the Quayside up to City Road and along Ouse Street to reach Lime Street and the Village Green.

By Cycle
The bottom end of the Ouseburn Valley is accessible to cyclists from Hadrian’s Way, which runs along Newcastle’s Quayside. The ‘Byker Link’ cycle path connects up to this and leads up to Shields Road. At the top of the Valley, a cycle route runs east/west across City Stadium, but if you’re wishing to come down into the Valley you’ll need to use the road, or negotiate the steep woodland footpaths from City Stadium. We hope to improve this situation in the future.
